What does the world cup matter when you've got a good hockey match to watch like this one! The Sheffield Vipers started the game the stronger of the two teams by pressing the Phantoms hard into their own zone resulting in them scoring the first goal after 4 minutes. The Phantoms responded immediatley with a Bran Dobrucky rebound goal from a shot by Sam Hunt. The Phantoms play clicked into place with slick passing and good control producing a second goal a minute later by Brett Hobson following some good work by Ryan Clark. Jamie Scarratt denied the visitors a come back goal when he came out quick for an excellent poke check. The period was marred by an unfortunate accident to one of the Vipers players. The Phantoms controlled the period with Gavin Austin sliding in an unassisted goal just before the hooter.
The Deesiders started the second period as they finished the first with a great individual marker by Sam Hunt after holding off two players. The Vipers had plenty of the puck but they couldn't take advantage of it as the Phantoms gave nothing away. Gavin Austin set up Brett Hobson for his second goal on a breakaway. Soon after Gavin went on a run into the Vipers zone and after a return pass by Sam Hunt he slotted his second. More pressure rewarded Ryan Clark with a goal to make it 7-1. The goal of the game came Brett Hobson. After a neat back pass by Brett in mid ice he got the puck back on the Vipers blue line and slotted a peach of a shot into the top shelf from a tight angle, a great way to make a hatrick!.
The Vipers came out with all guns blazing from the start of the third period and got a goal back after 40 seconds from a close range one timer. But the Phantoms soaked up all the pressure even after the Vipers were camped in the home zone for 90 seconds! Sam Hunt took the wind out of the visitors sails with a breakaway goal making it 9-2. After that the Phantoms controlled the game, Gavin Austin got his hatrick on 52 minutes, although the Vipers finished the scoring with a consolation powerplay goal to make the final score 10-3. Ryan Clark got the Phantoms MVP award for his hard work throughout the game.
Finally, all the Phantoms would like to pass on their best wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured Vipers player.
