A long way to loose a PIGGING game

Postby dheatonrue » 31 Jan 2013, 20:53

The Phantoms slumped to their fourth straight defeat of the season on Sunday with an away loss to The Sheffield Squeelers. The team travelled light on D and had to use hard man George Perrett ;-) (top of the PIM charts this season) as an emergency defender. Things got worse when Ross Walker leading line one pulled up on the first shift with a groin strain. Muchos creditos for the star man for playing his shift out for the rest of the game in D still marshalling his line. Stupendos creditos for the speed at which his helmet and gloves hit the deck after taking a check to the head in the 3rd period.

The Game started poorly for the Phantoms 2 down in 4 mins, this is a habit they need to break. 3 players in the first 5 mins ended up on their arses. Anyone would think that ice was slippy or something!

The Phantoms shipped a further 2 goals in the period despite improving their game considerably and competing well for the last 10. A big shout out to Mike Mclauglin[sic] for his first goal in club colours, unassisted as well. Given the mix up with the shirt names Mike can look forward to getting another ‘first goal’ in the return match against the Squeelers under ‘Mcloughlin’. Sadly Mike managed to also win the William hill ‘Last scorer’ betting odds awards for the night. It was the end of the scoring for the Phantoms.

A much closer second period ensued with some good defending from the phantoms but as through the whole of the match they did not have the fire power to threaten the goal enough (only 10 attempts all night). The improvement was also due to not taking penalties in the second period, though in the game they played for 18 mins at least 1 man down and it’s never going to be easy from that position. The ref was certainly 1 eyed but you know when you play away from home your going to get home calls.

The third period was close fought for 12 mins and with no score before the big incident in front of the bench seeing Ross and Leo Herbert go to the bin along with the Squeelers ‘Head checker’ #31. Amazingly the Phantoms almost saw the penalties out but the Squeelers got one at the death. 2 more followed at the end of the game making the final score 10-1.

A big shout out to Stef Southgate in goal as she saw heavy traffic in all 3 periods (54 in total) and to the Man[sic] of the Match Lucy Kirkham for a typical gutsy display playing with a smile on her face..

Despite the result there where some positives to be taken from the game. It did not play like a 10-1 and people had a great deal of fun playing. There was some good play out of defence transition for a change along the boards and done properly. The team spirit was good. The problems, to be rectified, were in crossing into the offensive zone, getting the shot off and putting the keeper under pressure.

The return game should be fun.

Just to get the discipline thing into perspective...

First, consider that almost all penalties are called against the player trying to get possession of the puck. Then consider that we spent about 90% of the sixty minutes vs. Squeelers trying to get possession of the puck. So comparing our PIMs with theirs just tells me that we spent the whole game trying to get the puck from them. What team spends sixty minutes chasing shadows and doesn't end up taking interference and tripping calls? One that gives up after 10 minutes.

The quickest way to improve team discipline (short of picking weaker opponents) is to improve team fitness. Most penalties are conceded by exhausted players trying to stop more energetic opponents.
