Hog Tied

Postby dheatonrue » 27 Feb 2013, 18:30

After a strong start and very competitive second period the Phantoms finally came up short in the re match against the Sheffield Squeelers, turning a 3-1 game into an 8-2 game as they faded towards the end. The Phantoms showed battling qualities throughout though and played really well as a team from the beginning to the end. There were a number of really good individual performances as well in defence and attack. A special mention should go to the Phantoms Keeper Dan Kitchen who was woken out of bed after a 15 hour shift to cover the game to be selected MVP.

Game Report
First Period
The Phantoms started brightly for the first time in a while, the game was fast furious and more than a little physical. Probably a hang over from the last game with the Squeelers where the phantoms started poorly and lost the game in the first few minutes. Chances where traded on goal but a minute in an incident on the boards lead to George Perrett taking 2 mins for checking. In the resulting power play despite a good effort the Squeelers got a goal. 4 mins in and the Phantoms were penalised again, this time Ross Walker for 2 mins. This time the Phantoms penalty kill was successful however with good shifts limiting the Squeelers chances. Just as Phantoms moved back to full strength however the Squeelers scored a Second goal.

Then it was the Phantoms turn on the powerplay though as the Squeelers brought a level of indiscipline into their game. First number 7 Kilby was binned for Interference and whilst that penalty was playing out Ross and the Squeelers number 4 got too attached too each other resulting in coincidental penalties. The phantoms pressed and pressed and made good chances without getting the breakthrough goal. The remainder of the period saw three more Squeelers penalties including one for a massive check on Tony Martin by Squeelers number 13 Armands Pastors which would have a bearing later in the game. There was mounting pressure from the Phantoms, but without a score to show for it. For the first time in a while though the Phantoms where in the game after the first period.
Score 2-0

Second Period
The Phantoms started the second period as they had finished the first, going forward and on top. Shots from within the house started to put real pressure on the Squeelers keeper and something was about to give. A sweet pass from Emma Middleton followed by a lovely wrist shot past the Keeper from James Asbrook for his second screamer in as many games came with plenty of support from the bench. James is certainly developing fast. 2-1, game on.
Rattled the Squeelers tried additional muscle to solve the problem of the improving Phantoms. This resulted only in a series of co incidental penalties and a hard fought game. The Squeelers did manage a goal though towards the end of the period. Right at the end of the period an incident in front of Dan Kitchen in goal ended in a tripping call and the Phantoms were shorthanded for the start of the third.
Score 3-1

Third Period
For the second time in the match the Phantoms defended a power play successfully only to be scored on within seconds of the man returning. The Squeelers capitalise and score another quick goal stretching the lead to 5-1. A coincidental penalty for holding follows and a period of 4 on 4 hockey. Once completed the Squeelers score again to put the tie to bed. Down and out the Phantoms started to attract penalties as first Leo Herbert, then Ross and George take turns to sit it out. The Squeelers score again before Armands Pastors is caught on the boards in front of the Phantoms bench with Adam Dadswell suggesting that maybe flattening Tony in the first period was a bit unsportsman like. Quick as a flash Ross leaves the bench to finish a score with him. After the game the Phantoms coach was quoted as saying ‘That was the best value for money 2 min pen ever’ and it’s hard to disagree.
Just before the end Scott Dutton eases into the offensive zone and rips one into the top corner of the net for a consolation goal.
Final Score 8-2

Our roving reporter, Lucy Kirkham, had this summary
On the positives it was a good game and alot better than the away game. Defensive pairings worked well and it was good to see a first period start so well and meaningfully. I think its worth mentioning a few players who had a great game and sometimes it goes un-noticed, firstly MVP Dan, had a cracker in goal after the last minute step in. Scott played a great game and finished it was a stormer of a goal and also John Burns played extremely well, getting in the right positions, moving on the point to give options and had a couple of shots that needed saving. Him and George were also doing well to cover each other, George moving back when John moved up to make sure D was covered.
